When something disturbing or distressing happens, whether in childhood or as an adult, the memories and its effects can haunt someone for years to come. Some develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD. Trauma can affect your mood, your self-image, and prevent you from truly living in the present and experiencing lasting happiness. Healing is possible through counseling. One of the most cutting edge forms of counseling for trauma is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (or EMDR for short).
EMDR is a therapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that emerge from disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy, people can experience the benefits of therapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma (EMDR Institute, Inc 2018).
